SEO services in Barnsley & South Yorkshire

You're easy to find, if somebody already knows your name.

Everyone else is searching for what you do. That's a different search, on a page you're not on.

Being known

your business name

Being found

what you do + your town

Twenty-five businesses. None have left.

You can be the best in Barnsley and invisible in Penistone.

A business on Eldon Street can be the obvious choice in town and invisible to somebody eight miles up the road searching for exactly what it does.

Nobody rings to tell you they picked a firm in Wakefield because it came up first.

Closing that gap is what local SEO actually is, whatever else it gets called.

It isn't a marketing problem. It's a being-found problem, and it's fixable.

Let's have a look together

Tell us the business and where you work, and we'll go and look at what your customers actually see.

It takes about twenty minutes. No cost, and no sequence of emails afterwards.

These are done in-house, usually the next working day.

Your position, town by town

Where you appear for your main service, in Barnsley and the towns next to it.

Why it matters. Ranking in Barnsley tells you nothing about Penistone. The gap between the two is usually where the missed work is.

The Google listing

Whether it can reach the map results at all, and what is stopping it.

Why it matters. The map results sit above everything else. If the listing cannot reach them, the website cannot make up the difference.

The website itself

What is holding it back, in plain terms, with the fixes ranked.

Why it matters. Most of what holds a site back is structural rather than cosmetic. It is also usually the cheapest part to put right.

Who is above you

And what they are doing that you are not.

Why it matters. You are not competing with Google. You are competing with four or five specific firms, and what they are doing is visible to anyone who looks.

We are not going to invent a problem to sell you the fix.

What Barnsley actually searches for.

Not our market, yours. This is what people in Barnsley typed into Google last month, for the kinds of business we build websites for.

What Barnsley searches forSearches a monthDifficultyAds cost per click
estate agents barnsley1,6004£6.42
solicitors barnsley1,0000£7.13
plumber barnsley7200£7.10
locksmith barnsley5900£18.98
roofer barnsley5900£4.36
electrician barnsley4800£6.49
accountant barnsley39010£7.20
joiner barnsley3200£3.85
builders barnsley2600£2.51

Close to 6,000 searches a month across those nine trades alone, and that is a short list. Not one of those people is looking for an SEO agency. They are looking for a plumber, a solicitor, a roofer. They are looking for you.

Now look at the middle column. Most of these sit at a difficulty of zero, which means the first page in Barnsley is not being seriously contested. That is unusual for numbers this size, and it will not stay true indefinitely.

The right-hand column is what the same visitor costs if you buy them instead. A locksmith click in Barnsley runs at £18.98 on Google Ads. Fifty of those is £949 a month, every month, and it stops the day you stop paying. Ranking for the same term costs nothing per click once you are there.

Your trade is probably not on this list. Ask, and we will pull the real Barnsley number for it before you commit to anything. That is the same check we run before we quote, and occasionally it is the reason we tell somebody not to bother.

What it takes to show up in Barnsley right now.

Three businesses hold the map results for plumber barnsley. This is what they look like today.

  1. 15.0220 reviewsnot stated
  2. 24.947 reviews10+ yrs trading
  3. 35.033 reviews10+ yrs trading

The lowest way in is 33 reviews, not the 220 the biggest of the three has. Across the nine towns we cover that bar runs from 9 in Lincoln to 243 in Sheffield, which is why the same plan does not work in all of them.

And this is what the 10 results underneath them are actually made of.

  1. 1Checkatrade
  2. 2A Barnsley plumber's Facebook page
  3. 3TrustATrader
  4. 4A Barnsley plumber's own website
  5. 5A plumber based in Wakefield
  6. 6Hamuch
  7. 7Indeed job listings
  8. 8Able Group, a national brand
  9. 9A Barnsley plumber's own website
  10. 10Checkatrade again

8 of the 10 are a directory, a national brand or a listing you do not control. The fourth result is the first Barnsley business showing its own website. That is the gap a local business can take.

Two open files.

Two jobs in progress, rather than two finished stories. Neither site has been live long enough for a before and after to mean anything yet, so there isn't one here. The files stay open, and we add to them as the evidence arrives.

Neither of these is a Barnsley business, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Quickpickings trades in Sheffield, twenty minutes down the A61. Danum is in Doncaster. What transfers is not the postcode but the pattern: an established trade whose website was carrying none of its reputation, and a record of what actually moved once that was fixed.

QuickpickingsSheffield · locksmith · live since May 2026

The rebuild landed in May and the groundwork in June: robots.txt fixed, sitemap submitted, review markup connected to the live Google reviews, and the homepage retargeted at the term people actually search for rather than the one the business calls itself. Two months of data is not enough to draw a conclusion from, so we are not drawing one.

Most SEO agencies can't touch the website they're being paid to fix.

The practical answers.

For the map results, mostly yes. Google weights how close you are to the person searching, and there is no arguing with it.

For the ordinary results underneath, no. A page written properly about the work you do in a town can rank there whether or not you have a unit in it. Most of the local SEO work lives in that second half, and it is the half most businesses never use.

If you want to be found in them, yes. One page cannot rank for seven towns, because it isn't about any of them in particular.

That doesn't mean seven thin pages with the town name swapped over. It means seven pages worth reading, which is why we do them one at a time rather than all at once.

Start with the listing itself. If your Google Business Profile is unverified, or filed under the wrong category, you are not eligible for the pack however good the website is. Consistency across the web comes next, then reviews.

The three holding the Barnsley map results for plumber sit on 220, 47 and 33 reviews. The lowest way in is 33, which is a few months of asking every customer properly rather than anything you have to buy.

No. Your Google Business Profile can run as a service area business, which hides the street address and shows the places you travel to instead. For you that list is Barnsley plus Worsborough, Dodworth, Monk Bretton and wherever else the van goes.

It changes the game rather than ending it. With no pin on the map, Google leans harder on how close the searcher is, so the pages about each area carry more of the load. In a pack that starts at 33 reviews, that is a trade worth making.

For search, yes, and that is the useful part. Penistone, Dodworth and Hoyland each have their own set of searches, and the town centre firms are rarely written about any of them.

A business that covers the whole borough usually has one page saying so. That ranks for none of them properly.

From £495 a month. Six months to begin with, because that's where the work is front-loaded, then month to month.

Getting set up is charged once, at the start, and it's quoted in the proposal rather than folded into the first month. You should be able to see it. The full breakdown is on the SEO services page.

The Google listing can move within weeks. Website pages take three to six months to settle. Anyone quoting a fortnight is describing something else.

Barnsley is at the quicker end. Eight of the ten results on page one for plumber barnsley are not a local plumber's own website, and the first one that is sits fourth. That is a thin field, and thin fields move faster.

No. And neither can anyone else. What we can show you is where you were, where you are, and what we did in between.

Not for the work. It's about sixteen miles and most of it happens on a screen either way, so we'd rather say that than pretend to a Barnsley address we don't have.

Both of the open files below are South Yorkshire businesses. That's a fairer test of whether it matters than a postcode is.

No. Plenty of this happens on sites we didn't build.

It goes quicker when we built it. An SEO agency that only does search sends you a list and waits for somebody else to action it. We just make the change, because it's our website to change.

Then this is the wrong thing, and we'll say so. Google Ads is faster.

Getting found is the fourth thing we do, and it works because we already do the first three. How the four fit together

See what your customers see, then decide.

There's no rush from our end. Most of the businesses we look after took months to get round to it, and the ones who were hurried into it by somebody else usually regretted the somebody else.

If we're not the right people, we'll tell you who is.
